Free service — provided as-is
MPG Calc is provided free of charge, without warranty of any kind. We make no guarantees about uptime, accuracy of calculations, or continued availability of the service. Use it at your own discretion. We are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site.
What we collect
When you create an account, MPG Calc stores:
- A bcrypt hash of your passphrase (the raw passphrase is never stored)
- A one-way lookup hash used to identify your account at login
- Your recovery email address — optional, only if you choose to add one
- Your vehicles (name, fuel type, optional number plate)
- Your fuel records (date, miles, litres, cost, calculated MPG)
- A last active timestamp updated when you log in or add a record
We do not collect your name, address, payment details or any other personal information. The calculators on the site work entirely without an account and store nothing.
Why we collect it
The data above is strictly necessary to provide the fuel economy tracking service. The lawful basis under UK GDPR is performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)) — you ask us to store your records, and we do so.
Cookies
MPG Calc sets two cookies only:
- Session cookie — keeps you logged in while you use the site. Expires at the end of your browser session.
- CSRF token cookie — protects form submissions from cross-site request forgery. Expires at the end of your browser session.
Both are strictly necessary for the site to function. No analytics, advertising or tracking cookies are used. No cookie banner is shown because none is required.
Third parties
MPG Calc shares no personal data with any third party. We have no advertising partners, analytics providers, or data brokers.
- Map tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap. Your IP address is sent to their tile servers when a map is displayed. See the OSM Foundation privacy policy.
- Fuel price data is sourced from the UK Government Fuel Finder scheme. No personal data is involved.
Data retention
Your data is kept for as long as your account is active. Accounts with no login activity for 365 days are automatically deleted, along with all associated vehicles and fuel records.
You can also delete your account at any time — see Your rights below.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access your data — log in to see all your vehicles and records on the dashboard.
- Export your data — download all your records as a CSV file from the dashboard.
- Delete your data — use the "Delete Account" option in the dashboard to permanently remove your account and all associated data immediately.
- Rectify your data — edit or delete individual records directly from the dashboard.
- Withdraw consent — not applicable here, as the lawful basis is contract, not consent.
